Syl and family,

Syl, I just recently learned of your passing and I am devastated. You were my best friend in High School at good old Saint Francis Prep. We lived 5 blocks from each other. I remember all the days we hung out after school at your house and all the games of Stickball we played over at Bayside High. We had some epic games! I remember when you got your new blazer/suv and had it detailed with Italian flags and "Unexpected Lover" We always laughed about that!

I remember all the games of pool we played senior year in High School with you, Ray, Demetri, Tom and Rob and others i'm probably leaving out.

I remember how happy you were when you met Donna and I was honored to be at your wedding.

I feel terrible that we lost touch as the years went by but I thought of you many times. I would give anything just to to talk to you again. I wish I had known what you were going through. My heart is broken. My condolences to your family.

You were a great friend, someone I could always count on. I am hopeful that we will one day meet again. God Bless. You will always  be forever in my heart...

Syl was a part of my life from when we were in Mrs. Johnson’s 2nd grade class together until my family left New York in the late 80s. Many of the specific memories fade, but the feelings and the impression Syl had on me will not. He was a kind and generous soul who made everyone and everything around him better. I am forever grateful I got to see you one last time, my friend, and to your family for welcoming me into your home. Thank you! My heart and prayers are with all of you.


Syl and Donna were so generous and kind to Anthony and I when we lived in New York. It was wonderful getting to know them and they made us feel so welcome. Syl and my dad, Mark, grew very close the last few years, and I hope they have reunited in heaven. Syl is so missed, may he Rest In Peace.

To the Evangelista family and extended families and friends,

I met Sil when he was a  young teenager when I became friends with Rosemarie. Sil was such a handsome teenager, friendly, and smart. My husband, Ron and I had not seen Sil in over 30 years and we had the opportunity to see him again in the summer of 2021. He shared his love for his children and family showing us pictures. Sil shared his concerns about being able to see them for many years to come. Sil shared that he would do anything to slow or stop the disease. Sil had a heart and love for his family which showed during our conversation and his actions over the last few years. Sil was a champion as he strived to beat all odds and was called by God to serve with him, Sil left us with dignity and memories that only he could leave us. Ron and I wish the Evangelista Family our sincere sympathy. May God help each and every one in the family to find serenity and peace at this time.

Rest in Peace Syl. I can’t believe you are gone too soon and fast. I am thankful for all our beautiful memories. You were one of my first friends that I made when we moved next door to you. From playing tennis to snowball fights,going to your pool club,attending our first movie with our dads,cruising in your mom’s car with Rose at the wheel to Astoria park,hanging out every Friday night @ each other’s houses while our parents played cards, great parties and lazy days together to you ripping out both my son’s first baby teeth in 2.2 seconds to more recently our religious excursions,walks to the parks through the neighborhood and marina..We had awesome talks and reflections and left nothing unsaid. You are truly an inspiration,brave,courageous,dignified and accepted your fate with grace. To know you was to love you. My heart goes out to your beautiful family. May God wrap his arms around you all and give you peace and serenity!! Much love🙏💔

Our time together albeit too short, is packed with so many memories and experiences they fill multiple lifetimes. From second grade, all through school, into marriage, vacations, fatherhood our friendship has stood the test of time. Thank you, for always being the best part of my life. Your attitude and outlook even when facing such a difficult challenge is an inspiration to all. Never once did you complain never once did you despair. I’ll take a queue from you and I won’t be angry, I won’t question why… I’ll put on that charming “Vesh” smile, take a breath and say that...  "I know you had to leave for now, and our hearts are broken, but this is not goodbye, it’s just ..... until we see each other again..."

When I first met you I felt a kindness and a sincerity about you.
And...I also remember telling your sister, how handsome you are too!!
Sil, you have been a blessing to many and will continue to be. You have two beautiful, loving children and a wife that loves you.

Syl you were a great friend who always had my back. The older brother growing up that I never had. So many great memories on Franny Lew cruising in the “Unexpected Lover” your Chevy Blazer and named after your favorite song by Lime. Cruising Astoria Park. The Buccaneer Diner. Stickball at Bayside HS.  Whenever Cynthia comes on the radio Change On Me will never sound the same. Till we meet again I love you big brother.

I am so proud of our dear friend Dr. Sylvester Evangelista for his love, courage, and concern he showed for his family, relatives, friends, and all people around him. He knew the end of his life was coming and he stood tall like the man he was. He never showed sadness or bitterness, instead, with his distinguished way he gave us love and courage.
"Mr. Courageous." That's how you will be remembered.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Dr. Evangelista was a wonderful dentist, teacher and friend to many of us at NYU College of Dentistry.  His community service and compassion towards his patients and students is unmatched.  This world lost a wonderful human being.  I cannot express how much he will be missed.
