Samuel Quintero passed away on Monday, May 9th 2022 at the age of 83, in the Bronx. He was born on November 6, 1938, in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico to Delfin and Herminia (Vazquez) Quintero, and moved with his family to New York City when he was 9 years old. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and Brooklyn College and later became a Certified Public Accountant. In his early adulthood he worked as both a postal worker and a NYC Housing Authority Police Officer, as well as serving in the U.S. Army Reserve. He ultimately enjoyed a decades-long career as the assistant comptroller at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx. Sam was always dedicated to advancing the interests of his community. In his retirement, Sam remained active, volunteering with the Puerto Rican Day Parade Education Committee and the Latino Social Work Coalition and Scholarship Fund, Inc.
In 1967, Sam survived a devastating train accident which resulted in a double amputation. With a fierce determination, along with the uncompromising support of family and friends, he continued to live a fully active life with prostheses. He traveled domestically and internationally, drove his family on long road trips, attended ball games and concerts, and cheered on his kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews from the sidelines. He loved taking photos of his loved ones in action and was committed to documenting their lives and accomplishments.
Sam’s faith in God was the cornerstone of his life. As a young man he attended the Assemblies of God Spanish Eastern District Bible School, and served as a youth leader at Segunda Iglesia Pentecostal (aka La Quinta). Over the years he has been part of many church congregations including Calvary Tabernacle, Kings Highway Baptist Church, The International Christian Center, and Bellerose Assembly of God. He was a godly man who followed Christ’s example in humility and service to others. Those who knew Sam were inspired by his courage, strength, faith, selflessness, and optimism.
Sam was predeceased by his beloved wife Louise, his brother Efrain, and his grandson Daniel. He is survived by his siblings: Reverend Aida Rosa and Reverend David Quintero; his four children and their spouses: Scott and Liliam Quintero, Liza and Daniel Diehl, Steven and Bonnie Quintero, and Kelly and Bentley Lashley; his grandchildren: Katharine, Sarah, Alexander, Andrew, Hannah, Nicole, Benjamin, Sophia, Timothy, Isabella, Natalia, and Max; and his great-granddaughter, Temperance.
