Joseph (Joe) Blascovich was born on April 22nd, 1930 in Istria, Croatia (then Italy) to John Blascovich and Lucy Blascovich (née Licul). Joe grew up a farmer pickling vegetables, raising livestock, and making wine, mostly for subsistence with his parents, grandparents, and siblings. In 1951, Joe immigrated to the United States, settling in New York and working for a time as a busboy in a Manhattan Restaurant and at a factory making lanes for bowling alleys. In 1957, he met Gina Skopac and they were married the same year. Joe eventually took up a career as a heavy-construction carpenter, working on constructing the bases of buildings and infrastructure all over New York City until his retirement in 1986.
Gina and Joe had one daughter, Cynthia, who was the apple of Joe’s eye. He also had a loving family, including his son-in-law, two granddaughters, and grandson-in-law. Not least among his loved ones were two dogs, one grand-dog, and three great-grand-dogs, whom he loved and celebrated every day as an avid animal lover. Joe was an unmatched gardener and gave his gorgeous tomatoes, figs, and bay leaves to his strong group of long-time friends in his neighborhood of Whitestone. He could often be found on his block regaling neighbors with stories and jokes.
