Born of humble beginnings in Mount Zion, Jamaica, she was the eldest of 9 children on the maternal side of her family. Clarelyn was given an opportunity to be educated in Kingston, Jamaica, she was supported financially by her uncles, Edbert Betton and Lenord Betton and her aunties, the Walkers. Clarelyn made the most of the opportunities that life presented and answered the call for workers from the motherland (United Kingdom). She trained in London as a midwife where she met and married John Bynoe, together they made a life in the East end of London they had two children, Debbie and Stephen.
Clarelyn was ambitious, had a strong spirit and drive to achieve so together as a couple they decided that America could offer them and their children more opportunities for a better life. They immigrated to the US in 1968 during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. She went on to further her education and trained and qualified as a Registered nurse. As a Black woman, there were many hurdles and barriers challenges that she faced and overcame. One of her many achievements is taking her employer Queens General Hospital to court for discrimination, she won the case and was given the position of Head Nurse of the Obstetrician Ward. Clarelyn had a strong will and passion for justice she believed in equality and human rights. She was a strong advocate and supporter of the Democratic Party and loved to debate her political views. She was a fighter and would fiercely defend what was close to her heart and what she deeply believed in. She had a phenomenal amount of energy and drive which resulted in her working hard for her extended family, always an open door, always lending a financially supportive hand and so many of her family have benefitted from her generous heart and commitment to her family sponsoring them to come to the US. Clarelyn was instrumental in galvanizing expats (Jamaicans living abroad) to give back to the community in Mount Zion to buy books, and school supplies, and support young people with their education.
Clarelyn never forgot her humble beginning, she wasn’t content with her financial success, she knew what it was to be poor and go without, which is why she supported many charities, including the community she came from. The world will not be the same without her for those who loved and cherished her. She will be deeply missed as our lives are richer and more fulfilled due to the values, she lived by which can be simply put as
“I am because we are” (ubuntu African proverb)
