Family members from all over the United States and Spain gathered in the past week to be at her side. Amelia shared the same special bond of a closely knit clan and close friends in her final days and hours as she had throughout her wonderful life. Thankfully, her passing was gentle and proceeded with the dignity and the fellowship of great love, according to her sons.
Amelia was born on Sept. 23, 1921 in Astoria, Queens to parents Raffaele Valentino and Francis Violante. For Amelia, family always came first. An expert cook, one of Amelia's passions was to prepare meals and keep the home spotless. She warmly welcomed everyone into her home and Sunday dinner: family, friends and even new acquaintances.
Amelia also loved to dance so much that she joked that she might have pursued a career as a Rockette in Radio City Hall. Instead, she worked for the New York City Board of Education as a teacher's aide until she retired. She met her husband, Armond, before World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy as a bow gunner on a Patrol Bomber Mariner in the Philippians. While living in New York, Amelia and Armond were parishioners at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where they were married in 1948. Amelia was predeceased by her husband who died in 1979 at the age of 57. Amelia never remarried.
Amelia is survived by her sons: Salvatore, William, and Daniel; Daughter-in-laws: Liliana and Kathleen; Grandchildren: Michael (wife Marta), Alyssa, Thomas, Shannon and Daniel; and Great-grandson Matthew.
Interment is scheduled from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at St. John's Cemetery at 80-01 Metropolitan Ave.,
