Alan was born in Springfield, Illinois to Albert O. and Delores Sams (née Derry). He grew up in Petersburg, IL with his siblings, Martin and Susan. Alan attended Illinois State University to study music (BA and Masters) and become a piano master. This sparked his passion for classical music, theater and composing his own music.
In his early 50’s he met his soul mate, Jairo in New York. They fell in love and expanded each other’s families complete with Daniel, their son.
During his free time, Alan loved playing the piano, reading, watching sci-fi movies, and cooking delicious meals and baked goods for friends and family.
Alan was the happiest man on earth when sharing with both his immediate and extended families. Giving back to his AA program was also of the utmost importance. He was a calm, kind and honest sponsor, positively impacting innumerable lives, lending an ear and providing guidance whenever he could.
In addition to his husband Jairo and son Daniel, Alan is survived by his siblings Martin(Debbie, wife) and Susan, as well as his niece Jennifer. He was preceded in passing by his parents Delores and Albert, his stepmother Audrey, sister Pamela, and nephew Travis.
The funeral service will be held at Frederick Funeral Home on Saturday, January 29 between 3 and 7 pm. His family will be present to welcome loved ones.
