Mrs. Hope Velasquez Olmos, a phenomenally resilient woman, loving wife, mother of eight, grandmother and great grandmother to many more and a mother to those without one, went to Heaven on September 16, 2019.
Mrs. Olmos was 87. Hope was born in the middle of the Great Depression, January 1, 1932, in Cistern, Texas.
The death of a daughter, the farming accident of her husband and most recently the death of a son left indelible scars on her life. Yet it took the malignancy of cancer to finally take her from us. She was strong to the very end.
She lived life and was a role model to many. Some called her by her birth name Esperanza, others knew her as Miss Hope, Mrs. Olmos, or Tony’s wife. But there was no more important title or name to her than grandma and that is how most will remember her. She was kind yet stern when need be with her grandkids. She was one of a kind.
She had a life of longevity, a life of purpose; some call it a life well lived yet it is better phrased in her case that she lived a life well endured. One can find solace in knowing that she is reunited with the love of her life, Tony.
From working in the cotton fields to the farming areas, to the chicken egg plants, to being employed as a CNA, to raising a family alongside the love of her life, Tony. She accomplished what she wanted on her terms.
The work goes on, and though Hope is no longer here with us on Earth, the life of Hope must be a guiding light to complete the unfinished work for our time and nurture the future generations.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Tony Olmos; son, Bennie Olmos and daughter, Diane Olmos. She is survived by sons, Raul Sr. (Maria), Jessie (Rosa) and Oscar (Connie) Olmos, all of Flatonia, daughters, Teresa Hranicky (Ronnie) and Olga Alvarado, both of Schulenburg, and Olivia Olmos Sotello, of Flatonia; brothers, Armando Velasquez of Flatonia, David Velasquez of Houston, and Joe Velasquez of Weimar; sisters, Norma Montoya of Flatonia and Dora Flores of Houston as well as many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons David, Elias, Raul Jr. and Jacob Olmos, David and Erasmo Montenegro Jr., Blane Sotello and Marcos Tenerio Jr.
