Verna Mae Johnson

Verna Mae Johnson of Palm Coast transitioned peacefully on September 11, 2024, at Advent Health Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, Palm Coast, FL. She was born in Kingston, Jamaica on October 29, 1941, to the late Clavius Williams and May “Mother” Chambers. Verna's journey through life was marked by love and family.

Verna grew up and was educated in Kingston, Jamaica. She later migrated to the United States settling in Plainfield, New Jersey. She worked for Lucent Technologies Bell Labs. She was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Mohawk Lodge, both located in New Jersey.

Verna was married to Bernard Lloyd Johnson. That union produced two children, daughter Annmarie and son Richard Johnson.

Verna relocated to Palm Coast in 2005. She joined First AME Church of Palm Coast on December 18, 2005. She was a faithful member of the choir. Verna loved cooking and gardening. Her garden contained fruits, vegetables and eye-catching flowers. She was employed by the Flagler School District and retired after many years of service. She joined the United Caribbean Cultural Association of Palm Coast, Inc. and the Grenadian Association of Palm Coast. She was supportive of events sponsored by the African American Cultural Society and the Afro-American Caribbean Heritage Organization. Sister Verna was always stylishly dressed for the occasion. She lived a life filled with faith, compassion, and a strong sense of community.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clavius Williams and May “Mother” Chambers.

She is survived by her children, daughter Annmarie and son Richard. Grandson Trevor Johnson, granddaughter Ciara Johnson and a host of other relatives and friends. Verna will be greatly missed!

A church viewing for Verna will be held Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM at First AME Church of Palm Coast, 91 Old Kings Road North, Palm Coast, Florida 32137. Following the church viewing will be a funeral service at 5:30 PM at the church. Inurnment at Flagler Memorial Gardens will be scheduled at a later date.
