Morris Leon Cowell, was born on May 29, 1945, in Washington, North Carolina to the late Georgia Cowell and Essex Moore. He entered into eternal life on Friday, April 12, 2024, to join the Savior in that home not built by hands, but whose maker and builder is God.
Leon is survived by his loving wife Darlene T. Cowell for 33 years and three children, Robert L. White and his wife Charlene of Naples, Italy, and Tiffany N. Cowell of Virgina Beach, Virginia and her fiance Doug Gipson, and Julian A. Cowell of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren Daulton White and Dylan White. One brother-in-law Cecil D. Thompson, Jr. and his wife Colette, nephew Ryan D. Thompson, niece Kimberly A. Hall and her husband LaTron and their two children Kinsley and LaTron Jr. and other relatives and friends.
Leon served honorably as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1967 – 1973. He earned the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He earned Citations and Campaign Ribbons: Vietnam Counter Offense and TET 69/Counter Offense.
After leaving the United States Army Leon returned to Norfolk State University and received his Bachelor of Sciences Degree in Business Administration. He then had a long career in retail sales and management.
Leon found Christ at an early age and at his death he was a devoted member of Word Tabernacle Church, Rocky Mount, North Carolina and the Palm Coast United Methodist Church, Palm Coast, Florida.
Leon was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Chapter Gamma Xi of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), African American Cultural Society (AACS), and the North East Florida Jazz Association (NEFJA).
Leon was an avid, enthusiastic, over the top, and focused like a laser double deck Pinochle player. He was a member of the Sandhill Pinochle Club of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and participated in professional tournaments.
