Dr. Larry Wilson Long, 86, of Flagler Beach entered into rest on October 30, 2024 with his family by his side. Larry was born in Christiansburg, Virginia to Lawrence and Eunice Long on September 26, 1938. Larry lived a full life with immense love for his family, especially his grandchildren.
Larry graduated from Western Kentucky University with his Bachelor’s degree before earning his Master’s degree from East Carolina University. He then pursued his Ed.D at Virginia Tech, dedicating his life to education and inspiring countless students throughout his teaching career.
After retiring from teaching, Larry followed his passion for horticulture by founding Diamond L Farms, a thriving fern farm that reflected his love for nature and dedication to quality. In 1993 he moved to Flagler Beach where he quickly became and active member of the community. As Chairman of Downtown Redevelopment Committee, he played a vital role in modernizing the area, including the successful implementation of underground utilities. Larry also contributed to local youth programs, collaborating with Syd Crosby on the Juvenile Justice Committee, demonstrating his commitment to fostering a better future for the next generation.
Larry is survived by his wife Jeanne of 34 years, his children, L.W. of Radford, Virginia, Melanie of Tipton Georgia, Karen of Tipton, Georgia, and Michael Geoffrey of South Daytona, Florida, his step-children Jennifer (David Burnett) Reckart of Ormond Beach, Florida, and Jeremiah (Angela) Reckart of Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey, his 5 granddaughters, 3 grandsons, and many other family and friends.
Larry is remembered for his unwavering dedication to education, his entrepreneurial spirit and his deep love for his family and community.
