Janet was born August 16, 1931 in Detroit Michigan, the daughter of William and Beatrice (Berthiaume) Pokriefka. She grew up in Detroit, and after graduating high school, she was employed at Chrysler Plymouth.
She married her sweetheart, Gerald Hofer, on June 20, 1953. Supporting his adventurous spirit, she moved multiple times with him, while raising eight children. They settled in Flagler County in 1976. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially treasuring each of her grandchildren, and she dedicated her life to all of them.
As a devout Catholic, she instilled Christian values and a deep sense of faith in her children and taught them the great importance of family. Her unfailing sense of humor demonstrated her resilience, even at the most trying times. Her calm, steadfast love uplifted everyone she came into contact with and made everyone around her feel special.
Even after making 9 bagged lunches, preparing delicious dinners, doing endless housework, and washing mountains of laundry every day, she always had time to chat, especially if the conversation was about baseball. Janet was such an avid Detroit Tigers fan that she would allow her children to skip school once a year to attend their spring training in Lakeland.
Known as “Mama Hofer” to many in Flagler Beach, Janet always seemed to have enough food and clean towels to welcome her children’s friends into their home.
She leaves her eight children: Susan (Jim) Riegler of Rapids City, MI., Bill Hofer of Flagler Beach, Dave Hofer (Linda Provencher) of Flagler Beach, Mary Hofer (Richard Leblanc) of Chateauguay, Quebec, Mike Hofer of Flagler Beach, Chris Hofer of Flagler Beach, Tom Hofer (Jill Phillips) of Decatur, GA., and Anne (Luis) Cabrera of Decatur GA; nine grandchildren: Sarah Riegler, Robert Riegler, Will Hofer, Amber (Nick) Best, Laura Leblanc (Sammy Quansah), Patricia Leblanc (Joey Delisle), Elle Hofer, Alejandra Cabrera, and Gabriel Cabrera; six great-grandchildren: Mathew, Magnolia, Maribel, Mabel, Samuel, and Eva. She also leaves two sisters, Jacqueline (Jack) Masserang and Jeanine Pokriefka-Carrier.
Her husband of 53 years passed away June 5, 2007. Besides her parents, husband, and seven siblings, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter Emily.
A Funeral Mass celebrating her life will be on Saturday, January 7 at 10:00 am at Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, 915 N. Central Avenue in Flagler Beach.
