James "Jim" Earl Brogan, 76, of Palm Coast, passed on peacefully to eternal life on March 4, 2024, at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, with his family at his bedside. He was born on July 29, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Dr. Louis Emerson and Jane Brogan (nee Galligan).
Baptized at St. Francis de Sales Parish in West Philadelphia, Jim grew up in Overbrook where he attended Our Lady of Lourdes Parish School. He graduated from Malvern Preparatory School in 1965 and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting at the University of Dayton where he also was an active member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Upon graduation, he served on active duty in the Army before transitioning to the reserves, achieving the rank of Captain. In 1970, he met Alice Finore and they married in June, 1972. Together, they raised their two sons, Jamey and Jeffrey, in Pennsylvania.
Jim’s career began as an auditor and he continued his education, earning an MS in Taxation from Philadelphia University, 2002, and a second Master of Taxation from Villanova University, 2016. He, along with partner Richard Boyle, opened their own accounting firm which expanded to become Goldberg, Boyle, Brogan, and Shusman, later merging with ParenteBeard, LLC in 2008. After semi-retirement, Jim continued his work with Bee, Bergvall & Co.
Jim was a member of both Grand Haven Bicycle and Croquet Clubs. He held the title of 4th degree Knight in Knights of Columbus Notre Dame Council #10514. He served as Eucharist Minister and on finance committees in the parishes where he was an active member. Transportation fascinated Jim. He had a passion for model trains, planes, and cars. He spent summers at the Jersey Shore since childhood in Ocean City, Avalon and Stone Harbor. He shared his love for body surfing, biking and walks along the beach with his children and grandchildren.
Parents and siblings Louis Jr., Jane Doyle, and Anne Bannon preceded him in death while sister Kathleen Dickey and husband John succeed him. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Alice; sons, James E. Brogan Jr., wife Sarah (nee Cavell), Jeffrey A. Brogan and his wife Vanessa Waldref; grandchildren, Erin, Jimmy, John, Dominic, Forrest, Sam, Dahlia, Catherine, Claire and Alice.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 16, 10am at Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, 915 North Central Avenue, Flagler Beach, FL. Visitation will be Friday, March 15, 4-6pm at Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South, Flagler Beach, FL, and 9am, Saturday at the church preceding mass. Interment service will be celebrated at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken, PA at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum, Villanova University, Advent Health Foundation, or Catholic Charities USA. The family expresses their thanks to the health staffs at University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Advent Health Hospitals and Hospice, and emergency and home health teams. They are grateful to friends and family who extended tremendous care and companionship to Jim.
