Stephen István Szára passed away peacefully on the morning of August 1, 2021. He was a Hungarian-American chemist and psychiatrist who made major contributions in the field of pharmacology, most notably the first to scientifically study the psychotropic effects of N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). After the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, he settled in the United States and eventually became Chief of the Biomedical Branch of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse.
He will always be remembered for his keen scientific intellect and love of family.
He is preceded in death by three sisters and a brother, and is survived by his son Christopher Szara (Jeanne), his grandson Alexander, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church, VA at 1PM on Friday, August 13. Memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders.
