Sherry was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Rose and Harold Gibson. Sherry graduated from Lutheran High School in June, 1953. She attended Washington University in St. Louis, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Education in June, 1957 followed by a Master of Science in September, 1960. She married Ray Mahach of St. Louis in November, 1957. Sherry worked as a kindergarten teacher until she moved with Ray to Northern Virginia in 1961. She raised her two children in Falls Church, Virginia and went on to teach Physical Education in the Fairfax County school system for the next 25 years. Starting in 1973 and up until her retirement, Sherry worked exclusively with special education students at Key Center School. She was the school’s Special Olympics Coordinator where she transformed the lives of her students through the joy of sports.
While Sherry was extremely skilled at sports, dancing, and getting things done, her true passion was her family, her church, and her students. She was a longtime member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and School in Arlington, VA. Sherry served whereever there was a need, volunteering her time, organizational talents, and her passion to serve others.
Sherry is preceded in death by her father Harold, her mother Rose, her husband Ray, and her granddaughter Hannah. She is survived by her son Jeff, her daughter Karen, son-in-law Roger, and five grandchildren.
