

He was born October 1 ,1935 in the Bronx, NY. He was the second eldest of 4 children and only son to Arthur and Sarah Kaiser.
He grew up with a love of farming and agriculture. He spent summers working on farms in upstate New York from the age of 14. He was known as an outstanding student and strong athlete. He ran track in High School and played basketball on the Regents team at the 92nd Street YMCA in New York City.
He went on to graduate from Newtown High School in 1953 with a full scholarship to Cornell University, School of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Ithaca, NY. He graduated from Cornell in 1957 with a B.S. in Economics.
After college he went on to serve in the US Air Force for 21 years. He completed Officer Training School at Lackland AFB, TX in 1958 and went on to Officer training in logistics and counterinsurgency. He was awarded many honors and medals for his service including the Bronze Star for his meritorious service during wartime in Vietnam. He was also proud of his 1960 USAFE Olympics Best All Around Gymnast award.
He was stationed in various locations worldwide during his career- Europe, Asia and all over the United States. He served at Headquarters Air Force Logistics Command, Headquarters 7th Air Force among others, and in addition served over 6 years with Headquarters USAF Europe stationed at Ramstein AFB working with the 86th Tactical Fighter Wing and NATO forces. He retired in 1979 at the rank of Major. After the US Air Force, he worked as a government contractor in the field of logistics until he retired in 1996.
During his lifetime, Sanford enjoyed gardening, traveling, the NYT Crossword puzzle, investing in the stock market, and volunteering in his community. He was active with the Fairfax County elections as a precinct volunteer, a member of the FEMA Community Crisis Team, and local scuba diving club. He had a hunger for learning and enjoyed sharing his information with everyone. A critical thinker and avid reader he kept mentally sharp until the end. Most of all, he loved nature and was a farmer at heart.
He was a proud Husband and very family-oriented. Unfortunately, he lost his wife, Helga Kaiser in 2005 to cancer. They were married for 43 years.
He will be remembered as a complex, intelligent, passionate, generous and loving Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Neighbor, and Patriot.
He is survived by his daughter, Susanne Kaiser of Chapel Hill, NC; his son Bruce Kaiser and wife Kelly Parnell of Arlington, VA and grandsons Noah Kaiser and Samuel Kaiser; his son Robert Kaiser and wife Sydney Morris-Kaiser of Arlington, VA, and grandson Ethan Kaiser; His Nephew Larry Silverman of Huntington, NY and Niece Susan Blumenkrantz of East Hampton, NY.
He is preceded in death by His Father Arthur Kaiser; his Mother Sarah Miller; his wife Helga Fabisch; and his sisters Marlene Silverman, Judith Kaiser, and Barbara Biddy.
He will be greatly missed.
