Dr. Roberto N. Sunga

Dr. Roberto N. Sunga, 89, of McLean VA, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2023 in Fairfax, VA. Roberto was born in Manila, Philippines to Patricio and Teodora Sunga on July 17, 1933. He married Edita C. Sunga on May 29, 1963 in Manila, Philippines. He graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, and completed post graduate training at Heidelberg University, Germany, Fellowship in Physiological Optics at Johns Hopkins University, and Fellowship Ophthalmology at George Washington University. He had a distinguished career at George Washington University Medical Center, for 50 years, as an Ophthalmologist and Clinical Professor, and upon retirement the university conferred upon him the honor of Professor Emeritus. He also worked as the Attending Ophthalmologist at Fairfax Hospital Northern Virginia. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology; member of the Vision Committee, National Research Council at the National Academy of Science; member of the Optical Society of America, International Perimetric Society, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, German Ophthalmological Society, Medical Society of the District of Columbia, and Virginia Medical Society. In recognition of his achievements and contributions, he received the Philippine Cultural Heritage Award for Outstanding Achievement in Science and Technology, Honor Society of the Sigma XI (Washington University Chapter), and the MAPA Blue Falcon Award in the field of Medicine, Ophthalmology. Roberto Sunga is survived by his wife, Edita C. Sunga. Memorial services will be held at 11:00am on April 28, 2023 at St. John the Beloved Church, 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean VA 22101, followed by light refreshments and fellowship at 1:00-3:30pm at Capri Restorante Italiano, 6825 Redmond Dr., McLean VA 22101.
