Born in Hull, Massachusetts in 1924 to Ethel Pearlstein Quint and Arthur Quint, she was raised in Boston in the Brookline area of the city. When Phyllis was thirteen, her mother remarried Bernard Wahle, who became a beloved stepfather.
After graduating from Boston University with a BA in Education, she worked in an administrative position in the Veteran’s Claim Office at George Washington University.
In 1947, she married Harry London, O.D. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before his death in 2011.
Phyllis was an avid reader of all genres and her daily newspapers. A weekly game of bridge was a tradition as was her nightly game of backgammon with Harry. Listening to the repertoire of the big band era and the music of Gershwin and Frank Sinatra gave her enormous pleasure, as did dancing with Harry. She was known for her glamorous style, her hat collection and her red mustang convertible.
Active in the Democratic Women’s Committee, she also served as a volunteer at St Elizabeth’s Hospital and the Hotline of Northern Virginia. Other interests included golf and world traveling -especially on cruise ships.
Phyllis, called Nan by her family, was absolutely devoted to her ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Having extended conversations with every member of the family was always a priority.
She is survived by her four children - Glennis Pagano (Jay) of Philadelphia PA, Judy Marcus (Jeff) of Inverness, FL, Karen Arrington of Gainesville, FL, Larry London (Kathy) of Alexandria, VA and our extended family who cared for her: Anabolena and German Terrazas of Springfield, VA, as well as her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
