Nancy McAteer Cannon, age 81, of Oakton, Virginia, passed away peacefully in the presence of her children on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Born on May 12, 1943, in Washington D.C. to Edward and Ann McAteer, she was the second of five daughters. After living briefly in New York for the first few years of her life, the family moved back to Maryland where Nancy was raised. During her high school years, she attended Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Maryland. In her early twenties, she achieved a significant milestone by earning her personal pilot’s license. In 1967, she met and married Hugh Cannon, and they settled in Oakton, Virginia.
Nancy always felt a calling to be a nurse and was affectionately known as “Nurse Nancy.” While her children were in college, she pursued her passion further by obtaining her degree and then her master’s in Nursing from George Mason University.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hugh, and her sister, Lynn Armstrong. Nancy is survived by her daughter, Erin (Steve) Krass of Royersford, PA, and her son, Hugh “Mac” (Amy) Cannon of Ashburn, VA. She also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Brendan and Aidan Krass; McKayla, Bailey, Liam, and Lucy Cannon. Additionally, she is survived by her three sisters: Debbie McAteer, Nina Munley, and Peggy Douglas, sister-in-law Martha Cannon, along with several nieces and nephews.
Nancy’s life was marked by her steadfast Catholic faith, dedication to her family, her passion for nursing, and her adventurous spirit. She led by example, volunteering for years at St. Leo’ s and to care for the clergy. She had a love of music and dance and was very artistic - sketches and drawing were her forte. She was a compassionate, energetic and sweet spirit. Nancy will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be on Sunday, September 29th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Veronica Catholic Church, 3460 Centreville Road, Chantilly on Monday September 30th at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be immediately following at Fairfax Memorial Park.
