Linda was born in Chicago in 1937, and while she left Chicago at age 18, she remained loyal to her South Side roots as a life-long White Sox fan. She received her BA at the University of Minnesota, where she met Jerry Singer, a graduate student in psychology: They were married from 1957 until his death in 2010.
In 1975, Linda and Jerry moved to Reston, VA to raise their three young children in a diverse and inclusive community. Linda quickly put down roots, becoming the founding president of the Terraset Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization. She was the Lake Anne Elementary librarian for many years before working for the Fairfax School District, retiring in 1999.
A lifelong Democrat committed to an ethic of public service, Linda’s impact was felt throughout Reston, Fairfax County and the Commonwealth in her decades of service on various boards and other volunteer work. Among these are: the Virginia Social Services Board, the Fairfax County Library, the Fairfax Water Authority, and Cornerstones (formerly Reston Interfaith). She was recipient of Restonian of the Year, Lady Fairfax (Hunter Mill District) and the Martha Pennino Award for Community Service, among many others. She will be sorely missed by her children, Judith, Matthew and Daniel, her grandchildren, Lulu, Charlotte and Aleyna, and her brother Stan Ascher.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to Cornerstones https://www.cornerstonesva.org/. A memorial service will be held next year.
