Laura E. Patton Kennedy died at her home in Falls Church on May 23 with her family at her side. Mrs. Kennedy, 94, was the widow of Captain Alfred F. Kennedy, USN (ret.), whom she accompanied throughout the U.S. and abroad during his distinguished naval career. The couple met during WWII when both were assigned in Norfolk, Virginia. Mrs. Kennedy, a native of Albany, New York, graduated from Bronxville High School, studied at Blue Ridge College, Bucknell and Barnard. She joined the SPARS (the Women’s branch of the Coast Guard) during the War. Her many interests included performing in amateur theatricals; painting and drawing, especially at the Coronado School of Fine Arts and the Corcoran Art Gallery; classical music and opera. She was active in Saint Patrick’s Episcopal Church, the Mary Washington Chapter of DAR, Cherry Hill Writers and neighborhood activities.
Her four children, Victoria C. Kennedy of Falls Church, VA; Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy Gische of Potomac, MD; Bryan C. Kennedy of Yonkers, NY; and Amb. Laura E. Kennedy (ret.) of Washington DC, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, survive her.
She will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her beloved husband at a later date.
