Lakshmi Mummaneni passed away on January 11, 2024, in McLean, VA, in the company of her daughters, Sailaja Raparla, Padmaja Mummaneni, and Vanaja Kanamaluru; her sons-in-law, Siva Raparla and Sridhar Kanamaluru; her granddaughters, Neha Raparla and Nina Kanamaluru; and her grandson-in-law, Nitin Malik. She was 89 years old.
Lakshmi was a public policy expert, a resilient seeker of opportunities, and a devoted family member. Born on January 15, 1934 in Angaluru, Andhra Pradesh, she was a member of the first class of girls in her village to graduate high school. In an era when women’s education was not widely embraced, she chose despite opposition to continue her studies at university, attending Presidency College in Chennai and earning a MA in economics.
In 1957, Lakshmi married Ram Mohan Rao Mummaneni and became a mother to three daughters. She also began her PhD studies but chose to pause due to family responsibilities; her three daughters would all go on to earn their own PhDs, a testament to her influence. Lakshmi led a long and storied career at the Indian Institute of Public Administration in New Delhi, at times traveling internationally, speaking at conferences, and advising policy decisions. Upon retirement, Lakshmi immigrated to the US to join her daughters. There, she could often be found advising friends and family, praying, and doting on her granddaughters. She spent time volunteering at Fairfax County Library and Sri Sathya Sai South Bethesda Center. Throughout her life, she selflessly engaged in service, making food for the needy.
A staunch advocate of the importance of education, Lakshmi encouraged those around her to pursue knowledge despite adversity. Her sharp intellect, unwavering determination, and quiet strength were admired by all she met; she will be missed, but her example of perseverance in the face of challenge continues to inspire us all. Lakshmi Mummaneni's memory will endure in the hearts and minds of those who love her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
