Every year without fail, I've remembered that today, March 3rd, is Jazz's birthday. Doesn't matter how many years go by, this day will always be Her day. I cannot pin the year I met Jazz, but I assume it was 3rd or 4th grade. Though she was younger than me, I looked up to her, figuratively and literally. Jazz introduced me to a lot of the things that I liked, even things I still love to this day. I'm so thankful to have met Jazz and to have spent the time that I did with her. I mentioned it before but, happy birthday Jazz. I love you forever. 

The first time I met Jazz was in my 8th grade orientation for Marshall high school. The next year we found each other to be in the same gym class. That’s where everything started, where we became really good friends. One thing I realized about jazz is that her personality always outshined everyone else’s in the room and how she would bring light to every situation. She was confident in herself and didn’t care what anyone else thought about her. She was so outgoing and did whatever she pleased without hesitation. The last time I saw her, and my last memory of seeing her, was at a friends house where she saw me for the first time in a long time and she immediately ran up to me and gave me a huge hug and kissed me on the cheek. I have never received a reaction from any girl like that who was so happy to see me, and that really made my night. No other girl would have a reaction like that towards me and that, our last memory together, is something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. Thank you Jazz for being in my life and always staying so real and pure. I will never forget you.

Jazz was amazing, kind, artistic and really smart. I remember the days she'd draw in class, I was always inspired by them. The day she came to my house and we hung out at the pool and had pizza. I might not have been close to her like others but we had things in common. I really wish I was able to see her one last time.

This is so heartbreaking and surreal to write because of how unexpected this all was. I met our little Jazz years ago. We met at the pool, I was heading home and I noticed her walking behind me in the same direction. Little did we know we were actually neighbors. From that day on we became inseparable. We would hang out every weekend she was at Mike’s house. She became the little sister I’ve always wanted. I watched her grow from her gothic phase to the beautiful young lady she truly was. Every time I saw her, she never failed to make me burst out laughing because of her hilarious sense of humor and the way she had with her words. So, I pinky promise Jazz I’ll live happily and adventurous like she always did. It’ll take me some time to get there, but I want to do it for her. I will forever miss her and there won’t be a day that goes by where I don’t think of her, but rest easy my little Jazz.

I’m so very sorry to hear this news. I was Jazz’s kindergarten teacher and she is one of those students that you will never forget. Jazz had a heart of gold and a love for all.  She was a very kind, smart and sweet girl who will always hold a special place in my heart. My deepest condolences to her family. 

When Jazz first came into my life as a third grade student and said her name, I thought that I had heard wrong. The more that I got to know Jazz and became close to her, the more I realized just how perfect that name was for her.

Jazz was original, she was unapologetic, honest, strong willed, funny, quirky,loving and trusting. She loved with every bone in her body.
Jazz always told me that she looked up to me but I think that I looked up more to her, 

I remember when Jazz insisted that I tutor her in middle school math. I am an elementary school teacher and quite honestly middle school math and above terrifies me. She talked me into it and reassured me that we would be just fine working together. We managed to pull her grade from a C to an A, but not because of me. During the next couple of months we sat in front of the internet and she tutored me.

I also remember her stubbornness. She wore these long bangs in front of her beautiful face for what seemed the longest time. It looked like she was going through a car wash. I have no idea how she could see. It drove me crazy. However, she insisted that it was her style even if she couldn’t see and was unapologetic about it. Later on her style was better than mine.

Jazz saw hope in every animal, no matter how big or small. She treated all animals with the utmost respect. In the classroom or on the playground she was saving stink bugs, freeing the unfortunate bee or cricket that found itself in a classroom full of hysterical children. When she was outside of school it was dogs and horses.

Jazz was talkative. I had to change her seat several times. It didn’t matter who she sat next to, she would talk to them including the class hamster. 
Jazz had no problem speaking up if she felt someone was being treated unfairly. She had her opinions and they were strong. She had a great deal of empathy for others and always stuck up fo the weak.
Jazz was special. I am so, so sorry. ❤️❤️❤️

My heart and condolences go out to Jazz’s parents and loved ones. I became one out of Jazz’s two roommates in the beginning of the second semester at odu. She had this really cool aura about her. She was always so laid back playing video games or watching something on her macbook on top of her bunk. She always gave me so much confidence and was always there for me when I needed someone. I texted her when school was over saying how I loved her she’ll always have a place in my heart and I meant every piece of it. 

I met Jazz at a dog park with her Dad and sweet pup, Bear......2 years ago when she was 17 years old.  We spent some time talking on a picnic bench and she moved something in me.  I was visiting family at the time, and when it was time for me to return home, I said my goodbyes to her.  She stayed with me though, in my heart. How can you feel so connected to someone you just met a handful of times?  That was Jazz. She made an impact on all of us who were lucky enough to be in her presence.  Jazz, thank you. Why you were taken from us we will never, ever understand. 

I was one of Jazz’s 6th grade teachers at Kent Gardens Elementary. Over 1,000 students have passed through my classes over the years. Some we remember well, and others not so much. Jazz, of course,  was in the former category. Kind, confident with an outgoing personality you could not help but be proud that she was one of your students. Imagine my delight, but not surprise, when she came back to visit me in May 2017 to tell me of her college and career plans. We spoke for a good 30 minutes talking of the old days and former classmates.  To Jazz’s parents, as a father of two grown daughters, please accept my sincere condolences as to your immeasurable loss.

Here in London, my friend James and I met Jazz through her Aunt, and my friend, Jessica. We hung out and watched the sunset over London with an icy drink in hand before James made her dinner and got her safely back to Jessica’s. What a sweet and affable young woman she was. So much wisdom and personality.

I hope her family can find peace knowing she passed young but a happy girl. May you all find the resolve to lead happy lives in Jazz’s memory, for her. There’s more to life than the physical body and no one truly leaves us.

My deepest condolences to her family and her friends. May she rest in peace. 


Jazz was one of my best friends during middle school. Those were 2 really hard years for me, she was always there for me. She always made sure I had a smile on my face. I would never wish death upon anyone, but especially not Jazz. She was an amazing human being with the biggest heart.

I will miss her dearly. Prayers to the family.

Jazz was so loved and adored and we are just so heartbroken. We will miss her wit and humor and her gorgeous smile. The world lost so very much with her passing.

I met jazz at college she was one of the sweetest people I know. she made everything better. She was an amazing person who shed  light on any situation I am extremely thankful for having her as my friend. I miss her dearly. Love you jazz

I only knew jazz for a short year at odu but she has made a tremendous impact on my life. She was an absolutely amazing person. I’m glad I was able to call her one of my best friends. Sending my love to her family.
