Jane passed away on November 28, 2014 at Heritage Hall Nursing Facility in Leesburg, VA after suffering from Alzheimer’s. Just shy of her 88th birthday, she was the oldest of three children born to Ryland and Mary Ruble of Arlington, VA. She grew up in Arlington, VA and graduated from Washington & Lee High School. While working for the Navy during WW II, she met William (Bill) E. Slimak whom she married in 1944. Together, they raised three children: Michael Slimak of Burke, VA, Mary Jane Timpano of Round Hill, VA, and Patricia Carol Friedemann of Catoosa, OK. They lived in the Tyler Park and Broyhill Park neighborhoods of Falls Church until 1968 when Jane and Bill moved to Annandale, VA.
Jane’s life revolved around her family, her church, and her friends. A life-long member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene, her family, along with a host of dear friends, created an incredible caring and service-oriented community of worshipers in Arlington and Annandale, VA. She was a caring and loving person who showed many, especially her precious family, God’s love. Never an unkind word, she always saw the good side of people and she truly lived by the “Golden Rule”. She worked many years as a school secretary at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax County. After retirement from Fairfax County, she worked for Fairfax Hospital. Her first husband, William Slimak, died in 2000.
In 2002, she married Earl Benson and together they lived in Gainesville, VA until his death in 2006. As expected, she accepted his children, step-children and grandchildren into her life, sharing her love and affection. In 2011, Jane fell at home and broke her hip. Even in declining health, she was a joy to visit and she was a comfort to those around her.
She is survived by one brother (William D. Ruble), her three children, three grandchildren (Alan Slimak, Michael Friedemann, and Katherin Crossling), and five great-grandchildren (Jaxon, Phoenix & Emelia Friedemann; Andrew & Ryan Crossling). Her family will always cherish her loving and caring ways, her unwavering support and affection. She is the true embodiment of what it means to be a mother.
Services will be held on Friday, December 5, 2014 at the National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042 at 2:00 pm; interment to follow at National Memorial Park. A gathering of family and friends will occur on Thursday, December 4, 2014 from 3 – 5 pm at the National Funeral Home.
