GAO OFFICIAL, LOCAL ARTIST
Iris Brown Dorrington,95, who retired in the 1970's from the Indian Tribal Division of the General Accounting Office/Federal Records Center, died on September 3, 2010 , at Goodwin House Bailey's Cross Roads, in Falls Church, Virginia. She had Parkinson's Disease. Ms. Dorrington, a longtime resident of North Arlington, was born in Blanca, Colorado and raised in Rising City, Nebraska. She graduated from Kearny State Teacher's College, and taught grades one through eight-in one-room school houses-throughout Nebraska. Ms.Dorrington began her federal career in the 1930's as a typist for the General Accounting Office. At the GAO, she met her husband Ralph, who became head of the Audits and Review Division, with the Navy Department. Ms. Dorrington quickly rose to the level of Claims Examiner, with the Indian Tribal Division. She served for several years as President of the GAO Employees Association. Ms. Dorrington's first love was painting. She studied and exhibited at numerous venues throughout the city, including the Corcoran, and the Torpedo Factory, in Alexandria. She preferred oil over acrylics. Her landscapes and cat portraits ranged from extremely realistic to highly impressionistic. She is survived by her loving son, Philip Michael Dorrington, of Palm Springs, California.
