January 21, 1944 -December 29, 2023
Gloria Jean Glascock, age 79, of Arlington, VA, passed away on December 29, 2023, at Virginia Hospital Center, in Arlington, VA.
Gloria was born in Loudoun County, VA to the Late Melvin A. Dailey and Mattie V. Kerns on January 21, 1944. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Carl Holt Glascock.
Gloria is survived by her children Carla Glascock Morisi (Joe), Allan Glascock, Lisa Glascock (Jenn), three Grandchildren John Morisi, Sarah Morisi, and Joanna Morisi along with six great grandchildren and a host of friends.
Gloria's roots trace back to The Plains, VA, where she was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Mrs. Virginia Kerns. She pursued her education at Marshall High School in Marshall, VA, graduating in 1962. On June 1, 1963, Gloria and Carl began their marital journey, choosing The Plains, VA, as the starting point for their shared life. The 1960s brought myriad adventures for the couple, leading them to Falls Church, VA, in the early years before eventually settling in South Arlington. It was here that they crossed paths with lifelong friends, Jim and Bernice Duncan. Over the span of more than 50 years, the two families became inseparable, forging a bond that was especially evident in their cherished tradition of celebrating every Christmas Eve together. The Duncan children, Rita, Katie, and Jimmy, evolved from friends into more akin to siblings for Gloria's family. The
passing of Gloria's best friend, Bernice, just a few months before Gloria's own, was a heart-wrenching loss for both families. However, the enduring love they shared provided solace, knowing that Gloria, Carl, Bernice, and Jim are now reunited in eternal companionship.
Gloria dedicated over 30 years of her life to Arlington Public Schools, leaving an indelible mark on the community. Her journey with the schools began as the Lunchroom Monitor at Oakridge Elementary School in the early 1970s, a time when Carla, Allan, and Lisa were all students there. In 1978, Gloria transitioned to a role within the Extended Day Program at Oakridge Elementary, where she continued to contribute until her retirement in 2008. Throughout her extensive career, Gloria found immense joy and forged lifelong friendships within the school system. She touched countless lives during her tenure, as they, in turn, left their lasting impact on her. Gloria held a genuine love for all the individuals she encountered throughout her career. Those who knew her often remarked that when Gloria entered a room, butterflies and birds seemed to follow, a testament to the warmth and positivity she brought into every space.
While Gloria herself wasn't particularly athletic, she was the unwavering anchor behind the scenes for her three incredibly active children. Despite not being a sports enthusiast, she could tell you stories of the various athletic endeavors she supported as a dedicated mother. Without a hint of complaint, she frequently found herself shuttling between fields for multiple sporting events. Serving as the team mom for each of her three children on different teams, Gloria went above and beyond, managing concessions, keeping score, and overseeing first aid for her kids and their teammates. Gloria possessed a remarkable talent for removing grass stains, blood stains, and even chocolate smudges from every uniform her children wore. How those uniforms looked new for every game is a mystery to many.
Gloria was a beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, Sister-in-Law, and Friend. She dedicated her life to loving and supporting her family and her extended family/community. In her leisure moments, Gloria delighted in the art of crocheting, relished the joy of dancing, and, above all, cherished the company of her beloved family and friends. Ever a constant presence in the lives of her children and those dearest to them, Gloria effortlessly maintained connections and offered a sympathetic ear through various means. Whether reaching out via email, Facebook messenger, or a simple phone call, she consistently prioritized the emotions of others over her own. Gloria's commitment to staying connected and providing support showcased her selfless and caring nature.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff she encountered at Virginia Hospital Center with special appreciation for the ICU team. The quality of care extended to Gloria and the support they offered her family during this challenging period is sincerely appreciated.
