On the afternoon of October 18, 2016, Deborah passed away at Medstar Georgetown Hospital in Washington, DC. after courageously battling cancer for several months. Deborah was a beautiful, vibrant and youthful 64 years old. Her family and loving friends were at her side as she transcended this life.
She was born in Washington, DC on May 9, 1952 and was the first child of Robert and Ann Marlene Goff. Debbie was preceded in death by both of her parents, her brother Jeffrey Goff, and brothers Norman and Curtis Haley.
Family, friends, and celebrating life was Deborah’s lifelong passion. She was a devoted mother of three children - Lauren, Nicholas, and Christian and an affectionate grandmother of Leon Smith Liss who referred to her as “Lala”. She loved anything to do with the beach, shopping, birthdays and holiday celebrations and she was a “master” at each. She discovered the island of St. Barts one summer and it soon became a summer family tradition. The island was magical to her with the French culture and simple lifestyle she treasured. Ultimately, her daughter Lauren was married to Michael Smith Liss on the island.
She made many lifelong friends wherever she went and was known for her kindness to others. She encouraged her family and friends to “think outside the box” and one of her favorite sayings was “Don’t tell me how you can’t, tell me how you can!”
She is survived by her husband, Stephan, her daughter Lauren, her sons Nicholas and Christian, her grandson Leon Smith Liss, and her sisters Tina Rickard and Lorelei Van Sickel. She leaves behind many closely loved nieces and nephews as well as other loving relatives and lifelong friends.
Deborah requested a small private funeral. The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, technicians and staff at Medstar Georgetown Hospital who loved and passionately cared for her during the final months of her life. It was a heartfelt experience to see the warmth and kindness she was shown.
She touched the hearts of many and made many new friends during her health crisis. Throughout Deborah's life, she always wanted to make everyone else more comfortable and their lives happier. To honor Deborah’s selfless giving spirit, and in lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to upgrade the ICU family waiting room to help comfort those families and friends supporting their loved ones in critical condition. This area will be dedicated to her.
The family is grateful to everyone for honoring her life.
The family will be holding a private memorial service on November 6, 2016 at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Virginia.
