Former U.S. Navy pilot and Manager of Logistics at Naval Air Systems Command, David E. Smith, born in Bostwick, NE passed on October 9, 2024, one month shy of his 100th birthday, at his Falls Church, VA home. David was one of the few remaining WWII Corsair pilots who flew off the USS Midway aircraft carrier.
He is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, Vivian Douglas Smith; children Douglas, Debora (Michael Jaworek, son Lee) and Megan; brother Luther.

David’s Nebraska farm home was swept away by a flood and rebuilt with the help of the American Red Cross in 1935. In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made to the American Red Cross.
