On Tuesday, October 23, 2018, Charles Lindsay Perkins of Falls Church, VA, died peacefully in his home with family by his side. He was born in Reidsville, NC on May 7, 1935, to his parents Howard P. and Hazel L. (Strader) Perkins. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Marian Cook-Perkins, of Falls Church, VA and devoted children Kimberly Perkins (with former spouse Nancy Lee Perkins) and Dee Dee (John) Pierce. He leaves behind his loving grandchildren Nicholas (Jessica) Perkins, Christy Perkins, Charles L. Perkins III, Christopher Tignor, and Victoria Tignor, as well as nine Great Grandsons and one Great Granddaughter. He is survived by his siblings Peggy Jones, Patsy Charlesworth and Ralph Perkins. Charles was predeceased by his parents Howard and Hazel (Strader) Perkins, son Charles L. Perkins Jr. (Marcia) and brothers David Perkins and Jerry Perkins.
Charles rose from humble beginnings to serve in the Navy and became a highly successful businessman, although he never rested on his accomplishments and always sought to give back to his community. Charles was a philanthropist at heart. He was honored by Youth for Tomorrow, receiving the first “In a Heartbeat” award for his humanitarian activities, specifically his actions in providing food, clothing and financial support to those in need. He also received the Lions of Virginia “Distinguished Humanitarian Award” and was named Jobs for Virginia Graduates “Man of the Decade”. Both personally, and through his charitable trust foundation, he supported organizations including Youth for Tomorrow, Homestretch, Legal Services of Northern Virginia and Special Olympics. He was an active member of Columbia Baptist Church, contributing especially to the Church’s Food Bank. The Charles L. Perkins Charitable Trust Foundation provides assistance for individuals who have experienced financial hardships due to illness or unemployment. It sought to help provide a path for youth to escape gang violence, and provides college tuition assistance. His mission was brilliant in its simplicity – to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals, families and the community by seeking out those in need. Charles loved working and didn’t stop until the day before he passed.
Charles was an active, fun-loving family man as well as an avid Washington Redskins and NASCAR fan. He held Redskins season tickets for over 50 years and never missed a game.
