He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward McMahon and Genevra Miller McMahon, as well as his sons Charlie McMahon and Bobby McMahon.
Charles was graduated from Georgetown University with honors and furthered his education with master’s degrees from both American University and George Washington University. He worked as a teacher in Fairfax County for 40 years, managed Highlands Swim Club in McLean, VA for over 25 years, and followed his love for pools into “retirement” when he purchased Poolservice Company in Arlington, VA with his wife Nancy.
Charles was known for his dedicated work ethic, his charisma, and deep commitment to family. Charles and Nancy had a long and loving marriage, just three months shy of 50 years together. He enjoyed spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren, traveling the world, and volunteering at the church. He was constantly seeking to learn more, through making personal connections and his passion for reading. He captivated many with his storytelling and inspired even more to find fulfillment in education. He valued open discussion and through his love of politics and religion, he started the comparative religion program in Fairfax County schools. He played an active role in local, catholic parishes St. Johns and St. James, where he was a lector, eucharistic minister, and religious education teacher. He was an avid traveler, from taking his students on field trips to Russia to traveling all over the world with Nancy and their four children. Above all, he worked tirelessly to provide for his family, which continues to grow and will forever carry on his legacy.
A gathering will be held on September 8, 2024, from 3 PM – 6 PM at Murphy Funeral Homes in Falls Church, VA (1102 W Broad St, Falls Church, VA 22046). As Charles’ family, we can’t thank the entire team at The Kensington in Falls Church enough for their intentional and sincere love and care for our dad. It was felt the entire duration of his time there and continued to shine through with all the support provided for both him and our family during his final weeks. We feel so blessed knowing he was constantly surrounded by such wonderful people who always had his best interests at heart. The Kensington has always provided a sense of comfort for us during a dark time and we are forever grateful.
Dad and Grandpa – We will miss family yard work, eating at Metro 29 diner with you, your Christmas Eve reading of “The Night Before Christmas”, and hearing the exciting stories of your world experiences. We love you.
