Brian Harvey Houston, aged 67, passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He was born on December 11, 1955, in Manila, the Philippines, to William Joseph Houston, also known as "Billy Joe" Houston, and Jeanette Crawford Houston. Brian was one of six siblings and kept in touch with his brothers and sister throughout his life.
Brian was a loving husband to his wife, Caroline, and a devoted father to his children, William, Stephanie, and Isabelle. Nothing made Brian happier than spending time with his grandson, Thomas Houston. While Brian loved his career, it was said that the only time they saw Brian relax was when Thomas was around. His love for his family knew no bounds, and he created a warm and nurturing home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Brian was a brilliant scientist, an esteemed leader in the field of acoustics, and a workaholic who dedicated himself to his career. He spent a lot of time on ships, submarines, and in airplanes traveling around the globe in support of his work. Leading and directing the Acoustics Division at the Naval Research Laboratory, he made significant contributions to undersea warfare research. Over his career, Brian accumulated numerous patents and published over 100 journal articles, leaving a lasting impact on the scientific community.
In addition to his professional achievements, Brian found solace and strength in his Catholic faith. He embraced his beliefs, guided by them in both his personal and professional life, and his faith played an essential role in shaping his compassionate and caring nature.
Brian's commitment to helping others extended beyond his work in acoustics. As a mentor and leader in Boy Scout Troop 1532, he guided and empowered countless young scouts on their journey to becoming Eagle Scouts. His dedication to their development and the scouting community had a profound impact on the lives of those he mentored.
Brian was a patriot and spent his free time immersed in history & the US constitution. He was a product of the space race (much like many other Baby Boomers), and spent his days knowing that America's best days still lie ahead. In the throws of our chaotic world, Brian was someone that could bring you back to earth and make sense of things. He was someone you could count on to see the positives.
