Benjamin Francis “Buddy” Wingfield, age 91, passed away on July 12, 2022 in Leesburg, VA. He was born June 24, 1931 in Hampton, VA to Lalla Beazlie Wingfield and Emmett Lee Wingfield, Jr. He and Shirley Ann Ward were wed on April 14, 1956 and were married for 60 years. Ben was a 1948 graduate of Hampton High School, a 1952 graduate of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Apprentice School and a 1956 graduate of the University of Richmond. Ben was an Allstate Insurance agent for over 45 years. He was a resident of Hampton and member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church for 84 years, until he and Shirley moved to Ashburn, VA to be closer to family. Ben was a sailor, builder and fixer of all things. In their eighties, he and his brother Charlie rebuilt an antique Hampton One Design sailboat that is housed at the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum.
Ben was the loving father of two daughters, Shirley Brawley (Jay) and Sarah Stuchlak (Greg); devoted grandfather of Ben Brawley (Suzie), Pete Stuchlak, Anna Kovalich (Mat) and Laura DeSantis (Joe); and proud great-grandfather of Vivian Brawley, Benny Brawley and Charlie Kovalich. He was predeceased by his parents and four older siblings Emmett III, George, Charles and Lalla Rookh.
Friends will be received at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA on Wednesday, July 20 from 11:00 am-12:00 pm. A graveside service will follow at the adjacent National Memorial Park. A luncheon will be held afterwards at the National Funeral Home Event Space.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation or Havre de Grace Maritime Museum.
