Passed peacefully on July 15, 2018 surrounded by her family. Her soulmate, best friend, husband, and love of her life, David, remain along with their son, Jason Hansen (Stefanie), and daughters Jennifer Solomon (Patrick) and Molly Good (Jason). Barbara and David have nine loving grandchildren that were blessed to spend a great deal of time with them. Rachael, Emilie, and Gabriele Hansen live in Holly Springs, NC. Tyler, Nathan and Jessica Solomon live in Centreville, VA. Natalie, Caitlin, and Evan Good live in Arlington, VA.
Barbara was born in Canonsburg, PA on November 10, 1942. She received her nursing education at Allegheny General Hospital and worked there as a pediatric nurse. In 1968 she met David through family and friends and were engaged three weeks later. David and Barbara lived in Long Beach, CA for six years and then moved to Annandale, VA in 1975 where they raised their three children. Barbara attended Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, VA where she was very active with the Providence Food Pantry, preparing and serving meals at the Bailey’s Homeless Shelter, and singing with the “Providence Singers.” She also spent time volunteering at a local library each week.
After spending many years at home raising her children, she went back to school where she earned a degree in Early Childhood Education. She then enjoyed teaching pre-school aged children for many years. After retirement, she spent a lot of her time taking care of her grandchildren, which she loved. Barbara loved baking birthday cakes for her children and grandchildren. Her original creations were always a hit. Christmas was one of her favorite times of the year. An amazing gift giver, Barbara never failed to deliver on Christmas Day.
Barbara will also be dearly missed by her brother, Larry Simpson (Tillie), of Washington, PA, multiple relatives and friends, and last (but definitely not least), her beloved beagle, Pete.
There will be a private burial on July 22, 2018 at National Memorial Park. Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service to celebrate Barbara’s life on Sunday August 5, 2018 at 1pm at Providence Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider either a monetary or food item donation to the Providence Food Pantry, in her memory. The pantry is located at the church. Or, donations can be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
