Thomas L. Stanton of Fall River, age 93, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2018. He was the husband of Phyllis V. “Peachy” (Iodice) Stanton with whom he would have celebrated 69 years of marriage on September 6th.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Thomas W. and Alice (Dauphinais) Stanton he was a lifelong resident of the city.
A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1942, he was a veteran of the United States Navy having served on the U.S.S. Wilson during World War II and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from SMU, Bradford Durfee Textile Institute. He was a life member of the Tin Can Sailors, the D.A.V. Chapter 9 and the American Legion Post 314.
Mr. Stanton retired in 1992 as Vice President of the Fall River Gas Company after 26 years. He was a licensed Commercial Real Estate Broker and Agent and Vice President and Broker with Giroux & Associates. He was very active in the community and served as a Trustee for Bank 5 for 25 years, Chairman of the Industrial Commission for 12 years, a former Chairman of the Board for the Fall River Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of Directors for the United Way of Greater Fall River and as Director of the Thomas Chew Memorial Boys & Girls Club.
He was also the commodore of the Westport Yacht Club for 3 years and an active member for over 50 years. He was a member of the Over the Hill Gang, the Quequechan Club and the Fall River Lions Club. Mr. Stanton was an active communicant of Holy Name Church.
In addition to his wife, he leaves six children, Christine M. Stanton and her wife Dorene A. Menezes of Westport, Thomas L. Stanton, Jr., Esq. and his wife Christine J. of Plymouth, Phyllis L. Zolnierz and her husband Michael W. of Swansea, John A. Stanton and his wife Kerry A. of East Sandwich, Nancy C. Stanton-Cross, Esq. and her husband Ralph T. of Westport and Joseph P. Stanton and his wife Sandra J. of East Freetown; fifteen grandchildren, Michael, Molly and Christopher, Jennifer, Daniel and Matthew, Jack, Beau and Kay, Benjamin, Jacob and Corey, Patrick, Jillian and Thomas; four great grandchildren, Nathan, Ella, Oscar and Cecilia; and; two sisters, Evelyn B. Lavoie and her husband Wilfred and Marjorie G. McHenry; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Russell W. Stanton and Jacqueline M. Selleck and brother-in-law of the late Thomas McHenry.
His Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 10:30 AM in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Contributions may be made in his honor to the Thomas Chew Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 803 Bedford St., Fall River, MA 02720. Arrangements are in the care of Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, Fall River.
