Born in St. Michael, Azores, the son of the late Clemente and Maria “Nina” (Lourenco) Ramos. He attended and graduated from the Liceu Nacional. He immigrated to the United States in 1963 where he continued his studies at Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute, now UMASS Dartmouth, and Swain School of Design in New Bedford, where he obtained his Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts. One of his favorite classes was photography where he learned the art of taking, developing and printing his own photos in a homemade dark room.
Mr. Ramos was employed at N.P.M.D. Brown University of Providence, RI as an illustrator and designer for books developed in Portuguese. He was employed as a Graphic Artist with Reynolds DeWalt for three years in New Bedford before eventually going into business for himself. He then founded a design studio called T.R. Graphics from 1985-1993, to serve the Portuguese and American communities. Mr. Ramos worked at MA Alliance of Portuguese Speakers from 1993-1997. He was last employed by Millstone Medical Outsourcing from 1997-2002.
His love for music, sports and popular art led him to the front of several cultural and civic activities in the area. In 1973, he became one of the first members of the Portuguese social club, Ateneu Luso Americano. High interest in preserving the Portuguese culture and music led him to create the folk dancing group, Os Lusitanos, in 1974 with his late father. The group performed traditional dances and songs of the Azores, Madeira, and continental Portugal throughout the U.S., Canada and Portugal. He finally achieved his dream of launching a CD of his music called “SIM!!!” in 1986. He was also one of the founding members of the singing group Gerasons, enjoyed playing soccer, tennis and was an avid photographer.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters Nina Ramos and Andrea Ramos, both of Swansea; a son Pedro Ramos and his wife Erin of Somerset; two grandchildren Elizabeth and Joshua Ramos of Somerset; a sister Fatima Goncalves and her husband Joaquim of Somerset; four sister in-laws Tina Ramos of Somerset, Manuela Carreiro and her husband Antonio of Fall River, Helena Piccerelli and her husband Brad of Swansea, and Grace Santos and her husband Rick of Assonet; father and mother in-law Manuel and Eduarda Chora of Fall River and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Luis Ramos.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 10:00 AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT CHERRY PLACE, 178 Winter St.,, Fall River, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Anne’s Church, South Main St., Fall River. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
