Robert J. Gagnon, Sr., “Bob,” age 99, formerly of Fall River, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2023 at the Inn at Silver Lake in Kingston, Massachusetts. He was the husband of Mary J. (Burns) Gagnon to whom he had been married for the past 73 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Charles B. Gagnon, Sr. and the late Blanche (LaBrie) Gagnon, he was a longtime resident of Fall River and wintered in Newport Richey, Florida for many years.
A graduate of the former Msgr. Prevost High School, Class of 1941, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics from Providence College in 1949.
A Veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, he served during World War II and was a P.O.W for nine months in Germany. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, P.O.W Medal and the Victory Area Medal.
Mr. Gagnon was a buyer for the boy’s department at the former Hub Clothing in Fall River before retiring as General Manager from MC Swift in New Bedford in 1990.
A communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, he was a Eucharistic Minister, past president of the men’s club and past treasurer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. While wintering in Florida, he was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church. He was the recipient of the Marian Medal awarded to him by Bishop Sean O’Malley in 2001.
He was a member of the Montaup Country Club, the Providence College and Msgr. Prevost Alumni Associations, the Ex P.O.W, the 379th Bomb Group Organization and the D.A.V. An avid Red Sox fan, he was a proud member of the Society of American Baseball Research. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed travelling.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert Gagnon Jr., of Newport Richey, FL, John “Jack” Gagnon and his wife Beverly of Greensboro, NC; one daughter, Marylou Gagnon of Duxbury; two brothers, Charles Gagnon Jr., Donald Gagnon and his wife Jan; one sister Georgette McDonald and her husband Jack all of Fall River; six grandchildren, Molly Bauer and her husband Dave, Colin, Liam and Madeline Beatson, Helen Salvaterra and her husband Kyle, Jack Gagnon and his wife Natalie and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Jeanette Paquette, Claire Berube, Armand, George and Marguerite Gagnon.
His Funeral will be held on Monday, June 5, 2023 at 9:00AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in St. Joseph’s Church, 1335 N. Main St., Fall River. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00PM. Burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Bourne at 12:30PM.
