John M. Sweeney, age 80, of Fall River, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Joanne (Rushton) Sweeney to whom he had been married 22 years.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late John E. and Sophia (Szpunar) Sweeney.
A graduate of Warren High School, Class of 1961, John then received his Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Bristol Community College in 1986. He worked as a Mechanical Maintenance Section Leader for Montaup Electric in Somerset for 37 years until his retirement in 1999.
John was a member of King Philip Lodge AF & AM, The Old Colony and Fall River Railroad Museum at Battleship Cove, Utility Workers Union of America Local #396, as well as a member and officer of the FOPA in Middletown, RI.
Besides his devoted wife, John is also survived by one daughter, Carole Sweeney-Waldrip and her husband Adam of Fall River; one grandson, Cory Calise of Fall River, as well as several other relatives.
His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 10:30 AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation prior from 8:30 to 10:30 AM. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River.
