James F. Melvin, age 91, of Fall River, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Joan (Walker) Melvin and the late Rosemary “Peg” (Moore) Melvin.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Frank C. and Hannah (Sullivan) Melvin. Jim was a graduate of B.M.C Durfee High School, Stonehill College, and received a Master’s degree in Education from Bridgewater University. He joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Jim went on to work as an Educator in the Fall River Public School System for 30 years, retiring in 1996.
Jim had many diverse interests and was a former member of the Acoaxet Club as well as the Massachusetts Education Association. He was also a longtime parishioner of Holy Name Church in Fall River. Jim was a decent and well respected man and he was incredibly proud of his blended family.
He is survived by three children, Frances Silva and her husband Victor, Teresa Melvin and her wife Jane, all of Attleboro and James Melvin and his wife Allison of Madison, NJ; four step-children, Marnee Lancashire and her husband Ken of East Madison, NH, Frank Crosson, Jr. (late wife Elena) of Somerset, Kathryn Crosson of Fall River and Dr. Thomas Crosson of Buckland; four grandsons, Christopher Silva, Jack, Colin and Liam Melvin as well as many nieces and nephews, friends and several cousins.
Jim’s family would like to extend a personal thank you to the staff at Southcoast and Bristol Elders as well as at Kimwell and Charlton Memorial Hospital for their kindness and exceptional care.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 9:00 AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
