Frederick “Maurice” Lovell, age 94, passed away surrounded by his family, at 8pm sharp on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 in AdviniaCare Southpointe, Fall River. He was the husband of the late Pamela (Jeans) Lovell.
Born in Maesteg, South Wales, he was the second son and only surviving child of the late Edward and Mary (Williams) Lovell. He was born into the very hard life of a coal mining village. Tonypandy in the Rhondda Valley during the Depression and World War II was a place where few were able to avoid the darkness of the coal mines. But with the steady force of his mother’s selfless determination, Maurice was able to shake off the limited expectations of his community and complete degrees in Mathematics, and Physics from Cardiff University and after immigrating to this country, a PhD in X-ray crystallography from Penn State University.
During the 60s Maurice was a research scientist at Columbia University, where alongside many other researchers, he helped to discover the structure of Insulin, which led to the creation of a synthetic version of the hormone. In the early 70s he taught Astronomy and Physics at Trinity University in San Antonio TX, then went on to a career with Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River New York. In his 50s, just when most people are starting to think about retirement, he began studying for a new career in Psychoanalysis, and spent the remainder of his life in the field. He was a natural, beloved teacher, and helped to found a school of Psychoanalytic study called the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP) in Livingston NJ, where he was an ardent fundraiser and administrator as well as educator.
He continued to work with students and patients into his 90s Maurice was involved with local politics in Leonia Nj, where he lived for 48 years before moving to Tiverton RI. He worked to improve education in public schools, and established an ongoing 40 acre land trust reservation just 5 miles from Manhattan and helped to create low income senior housing for the elderly in town.
During his lifetime, Maurice traveled most of the world. He and his wife lived in the UK, the US, and Australia. Later in life he enjoyed many travel adventures with both his daughters from Bergen to Cyprus, to the beautiful rolling hills of his home country.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathrine Lovell and her wife Carmen Grinkis of Tiverton, RI, Fiona Horning and her husband Joseph of Jamaica Plain, MA; three grandchildren, Tristan Bruck and his wife Alix Bickson, Nick Bruck and his fiancé Alicia Green and Noah Horning and his partner Gabby Popovich and dear friend Irene Milton of Dorset, England.
