Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Edna (Abransom) Slattery. She was a graduate of St. Savior's Academy in Brooklyn.
Betty, as she was known, moved to Fall River following her marriage to George West in 1946. They owned and operated Dover Press until George's death in 1964. Afterwards, Betty worked a variety of jobs, retiring from the Fall River Board of Retirement. After retirement, Betty, an avid reader, enjoyed walking to the library and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She also made the world's best chocolate chip cookies.
Betty is survived by her three children, Sheila Barboza of Chatham NJ, George West and his wife Sheila of Port Charlotte, FL and Eileen Pontes and her husband William of Taunton. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: George West, Katie Barboza Salerno, Nicholas Barboza, Geoffrey Pontes and Alyssa Pontes Stablein and seven great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her sisters, Anna Slattery, Grace Slattery, Edyth Miritello, and her son-in-law Michael Barboza.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sarah Brayton Nursing Home, especially the staff of the Charlton Unit for their compassionate care the past six years.
