Daniel E. Bogan, 89, of Fall River, MA, former Mayor of Fall River passed away on July 16, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Son of the late Hugh Bogan and the late Evelyn (Gilligan) Bogan, he is survived by his beloved wife Jean C. (Higgins) Bogan, five children, Sharon Quinn (husband Thomas, Bristol County District Attorney) of Fall River, MA, Robert Bogan (wife Jennifer) of Fall River, MA, Claire Erskine (husband Robert) of Santa Rosa, CA, Kathleen Butler (husband Brian) of Weymouth, MA and Daniel E. Bogan, Jr. of Tempe, AZ, ten grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Hugh Bogan, F. Paul Bogan and Mary Bogan Pomfret.
A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1951, Dan proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the U. S. Army. A 1959 graduate of UMASS Dartmouth (formerly Southeastern Massachusetts University) attaining a BSME, he served as a member of the Fall River City Council for 22 years in total and 14 of those as its President. A former Firestone employee, he was the Owner and CEO of Borden & Remington Corp. which he revitalized to become a major player in the New England chemical market, serving municipalities and companies from New Hampshire to Connecticut. A very humble man, Dan, until recently was involved in many organizations which benefited Fall River. A past member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, a Trustee for fifteen years at the University of Massachusetts, the Lantern Society of the United Way, the Elks Lodge No. 118, former board member of the Fall River Five Cents Savings Bank, former member of the Board of Directors of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, former member of the Governor's Economic Council and a former member of the Board of Trustees of Charlton Memorial Hospital (now Southcoast), Committee member of the Capital Funds Drive for Charlton Memorial Hospital, former member of the Legislative Committee at Charlton as well as a former member of the University of Massachusetts Foundation. His business affiliations included the National Association of Chemical Distributors and the Chemical Club of New England. An active participant at the Fall River YMCA, he would begin his day with a daily work out prior to arriving at the office. Dan was also a member of the Colonial Navy of Massachusetts.
In December of 1986, Dan along with then Mayor Carlton Viveiros, formed The Fall River Carousel organization which purchased the former Lincoln Park Carousel and relocated this historic piece built in 1920 by The Philadelphia Toboggan Company to Battleship Cove. Dan served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the carousel organization and he along with many other businesses and citizens of Fall River, helped preserve this important piece of our local history.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration in 2004 by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, his alma mater.
Honored as Entrepreneur of the Year in 1988 he was recognized as a moving force in this area by Southeastern Massachusetts University's Small Business Development Center. Durfee Athletic Hall of Fame inductee in 1993, and a 2005 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Recipient by Durfee High School.
Dan was known as always giving an honest answer, not an expedient one. He made a decision and stuck with it. His code of ethic was such that his word was his bond. If you made a deal with Dan and a handshake was exchanged, that was as binding to him as a formal contract.
An outstanding athlete in both football and track while attending Durfee, he was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. A big sports fan, he loved his Patriots, Bruins, Red Sox and Notre Dame Football. An avid reader, he enjoyed discussing books that he had read and making suggestions to others. He passed on that lifelong love of reading to his children and grandchildren.
He and his wife Jean loved exploring new places and were often on trips to Ireland, Europe, Egypt, Russia, Australia, Canada and of course the United States. For him the best parts of these vacations were the new people he met and the sharing of cultural experiences.
A big advocate of education, he established scholarships at both Bristol Community College as well as University of Massachusetts.
Dan was true to his roots, his lifelong friends and his Irish heritage. A true gentleman, funny, strong and kind hearted, he will be missed as our Husband, Patriarch, Grandfather, Uncle, story teller, friend and mentor.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Perfect Care Match, South Coast VNA, Catholic Memorial Home and Hospice for the extraordinary care and compassion provided
