She was the middle of five siblings raised by their father, Leonard Leving, Jr, following the death of their mother, Teresa Grasse Leving. After graduation, Alma attended Melrose-Wakefield Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her R.N. in 1949. She practiced at Mass. Eye and Ear and New England Medical Center prior to moving to Chicago to gain a post-graduate certificate at Cook County Medical Center in Surgical Medicine. From Chicago, Alma joined the Air Force, 1st Lt. as a civilian R.N. to serve in Korea. In Korea, she learned that “scotch does not cause hangovers” and a few surgical procedures. Returning to Melrose, she ran the O.R. suites at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital for 27 years. During this time she met and married, Harold N.L. MacIver while a member of the Melrose Hickory Hawks Ski Club. Alma raised three daughters, Mary Beth, Heather and Gail in Lynnfield, MA. Well into her eighties, Alma moved to Fall River to live with Heather, her son-in-law, Dan and their sons Alex and Jon.
