“Mary”
Mary McAfee Cullinan Holbein, 95, was welcomed into the gates of Heaven by our Lord, Jesus Christ on October 12, 2024. Mary was born In Laredo, Texas on January 6, 1929, to McAfee Woods and Frank Cullinan. She grew up in Laredo, graduated from Martin High School, and was presented by the Society of Martha Washington. She attended Mount St. Vincent College in New York. She graduated from UT Austin in 1950 where she pledged the Alpha Phi Sorority. In 1965, she married John Richard, Dick, Holbein. Mary and Dick made their home in Hebbronville, Texas, raising their five children, and then moved to El Maguey Ranch, outside of Hebbronville.
Mary was a fun-loving person who loved to entertain her many friends and relatives. She loved to travel and was very proud of her Irish heritage. She was an active member of the DAR and looked forward to the Citizenship Ceremonies, where she loved giving the new citizens a flag to mark the occasion. Family was a very important part of her life. Together they raised their family and gave all the love and security a family could ask for. Her husband, children, and grandchildren were her primary focus, but she extended her definition of family to include many cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she welcomed into her home where they experienced her fun-loving spirit, great cooking, and the life of a rancher in South Texas.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, J.R. “Dick” Holbein, and her parents, McAfee and Frank Cullinan.
Left to cherish her memories are three sons, Stephen Newman of Hebbronville, Jeffrey Holbein of Bandera, and John M.
