Arturo Antonio Alvarez entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at a hospital in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 86. He was born on July 2, 1937 to Arturo Pablo Alvarez and Adelfa Quintanilla in Hebbronville, Texas. To the people of Hebbronville, Arturo was the owner and baker of Arturo’s Bakery and Café for over 45 years. His customers came from all parts of South Texas to enjoy bread from his bakery.
Aside from being an outstanding baker, Arturo had a great love for music. Many times, throughout the day, customers were serenaded by the “Singing Baker” with famous Spanish songs from the likes of the great Pedro Infante. Singing both in the bakery and for family events, Arturo was also a very proud member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Choir where members of the Our Lady of Guadalupe parish would hear them during Saturday night and holiday services. Aside from singing in the choir, Arturo was a very devoted Catholic, and for many years was also lector during the mass service.
Arturo also had a tremendous love for baseball. Aside from knowing the statistics and stories of many baseball greats, he also coached Little and Senior league for more than 15 years. During his time in little league, Arturo first started coaching Team Piggly Wiggly and later in his career he coached Team American Legion. Throughout his career, he helped instill the love of baseball to many children in Hebbronville. Even before his death, he would hear many of his old players calling him “Coach” in passing or in conversation.
Arturo is preceded in death by his parents; his lovely wife, Aida H. Alvarez, and siblings, Elias and Mario Alvarez.
Arturo biggest legacy is not baseball or music but was the love he had for his family. Arturo’s proudest moments did not occur with his own goals and successes, but with the numerous achievements of his family. He would not hesitate to create a smile for his family, and leaves behind many fond and happy memories that will be cherished now and in the future by his children, Arturo (Delma) Alvarez of Austin, Texas, Nori (+David) A. Baker of San Antonio, Texas and Daniel (Eunice Miranda) Alvarez of Austin; brother, Jose Juan Alvarez of San Antonio; sisters, Ana Huerta of Hebbronville and Estela Marquez of Kingsville, Texas; grandson, Arturo Antonio (Heather) Alvarez, IV; great-granddaughter, Audrey Alvarez; his nephew who he considered a grandson, George Henry Perez, and numerous extended family members.
