We all must now say our goodbyes, fond memories bring tears to my old eyes, one friend less to sit and chat things important or this and that, have a pleasant & glorious journey.



The Fishermen

John Shiner and John Marincek bought their first boat to begin their fishing expeditions. It was a 10 foot Jon Boat. They decided to travel to Uniontown, PA. The whole Shiner clan went along to a reservoir located there. Once the two person boat was loaded ready to go, there stood John's mother Martha along the bank fishing rod in hand. Being the good son he was, John gave his seat to Martha. Shortly after that we purchased a larger boat! One more memory regarding our fishing adventures was when we went to Piedmont, down in Southern OH to enjoy some quiet fishing. The boat was loaded on top of John's Ford Ranger truck cap finally. It started raining upon our arrival at the camp. The weather continued to get worse with storms and high winds. John Shiner slept in his truck while John Marincek was outside on a cot covered with a tarp. At one point John Shiner looked over at me and "you are not coming in this truck"! That was due to me looking like a drowned rat. The next morning John Marincek woke up with some stranger standing over him. He was checking to see if I was still alive. John Shiner was asleep comfy in his truck after the awful night. Eventually we did get out and do some fishing and actually caught a bunch of fish to eat. We learned a valuable lesson from this experience. Next time, buy a tent and a boat trailer! And that was the beginning of our many adventures together.

When I think of my Uncle John, 

I think of thousands of different lessons and memories throughout the years. But my most favorite memory would have to be the ones where I can hear the gravel on the long dirt road, smell the fresh air, and feel the sun kiss my skin. There are two places those memories will forever live; and that is at the land and in my heart. I will never forget the countless times Uncle John would push me on the rope swing. The way the sun peeked through the trees, and the way he would hold me close if I got too scared. Every time the sun peeks through the trees I will know it is you checking in on me. You will always have a place to be cherished, not only at the land but in all our hearts.
 I will hold onto you forever Uncle John.

He was such a loving and involved Papa. The kids brought him so much joy and they loved to spend time with him. When we found out if our second child was a boy we didn't plan on telling anyone until Thanksgiving dinner. He was convinced I had told Deb already, but I hadn't. He just could not wait and when on a drive with my husband John he got it out of him. John said "I didn't know what to do, I had to tell him, he looked like he was gonna cry or something!" He was so proud and excited to have a grandson.

Both of my parents made it a priority to watch as many of our games growing up that they were capable of, something that I am gracious for that’s left lasting memories.  One such memory is a story I tell of one off season indoor game that I played.  It was probably the only game I lost my cool for since an opposing player kicked my legs out from behind so I couldn’t take a shot on goal.  I started swearing and got up ready to fight but the player had run off the field immediately.  I just heard my father laughing hysterically from the stands and He started shouting at me “number 14 Bob, number 14 did it”.  He knew I probably wasn’t going to do anything but it always puts a smile on my face remembering how hard he laughed that day.  

Another memory I’ll hold precious is during the early days of the pandemic he and I drove down to Uniontown to visit his parents’ gravestones.  It had been a long time since we visited so it took us some time to find them but once we did we took our time cleaning up the headstones.  Before we left he wanted to start cleaning up some of the older gravestones that had overgrowth on them.  My father always would always try and do small kindnesses for other people that I’ve just known him to do my whole life so I just always thought it was something we were supposed to do.  A lady saw us, came over to thank us and my father as he would so often do lingered and talked to her awhile.  He was never shy about starting up a conversation with people.  Once we were done he drove me around showing me different places he remembered and eventually we drove home.  Just spending this uneventful day with him is a warmth I’ll treasure.

I am John Shiner’s oldest son John.  Some of the best memories I have of my dad were the long drives together at 3am driving out to the land to go deer hunting were we would have one on one time to talk. Enjoying deer camp together with his friends and brother Al sharing the same stories over and over again year after year.  Other fond memory’s are of going to sports events (ie little league baseball and soccer) and having my dad there in support of the team or coaching when we were little. He made it a priority to always be at the games. Many will remember him from his contagious laugh and cigar smoke (he smoked cigars).

My Favorite Memories of John:

My husband John always greeted me every morning and evening with a hug and kiss. He loved making breakfast for us and bringing me coffee. I always felt loved and taken care of and knew I could count on him no matter what. We enjoyed nature and would go for long rides in the Metro Parks and riding through our land on the Kubota.  During these rides we would have the best conversations. He really enjoyed our yard; how long the grass must be, the special fertilizer that had to be used and that anything green was good even the dreaded cactus! We agreed to invest our time, love and money into our boys and family, which he was very proud of.

Dear Deb, Johnny, Bob, Laura and family,
John has now begun his New Life journey. May God bless each of you with His peace and strength. We share wonderful memories  which will be cherished always.
My John spent many years together with him and shared a multitude of  life experiences.  I am thankful to have had John in my life for 24 years. His smile and humor will always be with us.
