He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.
Mark was born in Bicknell, Indiana on October 12, 1931, to Royal Mark and
Garnette Curry Pinnick. His brothers who have gone on before him were Robert
Curry, William Orris, and Warren Curtis.
He graduated from Edwardsport High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree of
Civil Engineering and Masters Of Civil Engineering Degree from Purdue University,
along with the distinction of being a certified Professional Engineer in the state of
Indiana and Illinois.
Royal Mark served two years in the United States Army from 1954-1956. He
worked for the State Board of Health of Indiana in Indianapolis, where he met his
wife Phyllis whom he married 1955. Three girls were born to Mark and Phyllis:
Laurel, Julia, and Leslie. In 1960 he took a Civil Service job with Scott Air Force
Base in Belleville, Illinois. Then in 1964, Mark took his family to Recife, Brazil
where he worked with USAID (United States Agency for International
Development) as a sanitary engineer. In 1969, Mark and his family returned to
Indiana, where he worked for a private Engineering firm. He took a job in Chicago with the Environmental Protection Agency, promoted to Supervisor over the state of Indiana.
In 1976, he moved back to Belleville, Illinois when Scott Air Force Base asked him
to return to his previous position. It was at the base that he met and married Jan
Muckensturm Johnson, and welcomed her children into his heart as his own:
Roger, Karen, and Laurel. They were married 38 years and enjoyed many things
together.
He is survived by his children: Laurel Robertson (Mitchel) of Ferguson, North
Carolina; Julia Bernhard (Mark) of Topeka, Kansas; Leslie James (Richard) of
Laporte, Minnesota; Roger Johnson (Jayne) of Millstadt, Illinois; Karen Galius
(Nick) of Tilden, Illinois; and Laurel Hutchinson (Tim) of Freeburg, Illinois.
Also surviving are grandchildren: Grant, Garrett, Victoria, Neal, Margaret, Jill,
Brett, Meredith, Julia, Vanessa, Joshua, Anna, Nicholas, and Allison along with 16
great-grandchildren; his niece Donna Pinnick of Vincennes, Indiana; and
sister-in-law Carol Hudack of Belleville, Illinois.
We all agree that Mark was truly loved. His love for us was never doubted, his
goodness never faltered, his patience hardly wavered, and his faith was not
lacking. Thank you, God, for our dad.
A memorial service for Royal will be held Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 11:30 A.M. at Winstanley Baptist Church in Fairview Heights, IL.
Memorial contributions may be given to Gideon's International.
