Mary D. Houston was born on March 7, 1942, in East St. Louis, Illinois to Arlene (Shields) Montgomery, who preceded her in death. She was the oldest of three children. Her brother Willie “Duck” Montgomery also preceded her in death.
Mary confessed a hope in Christ at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She was baptized under the pastorate leadership of Reverend John H. Rouse, where she grew under his leadership. Mary was a devoted member to the church, serving on the ushering board until she fell ill.
Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. William Houston. To this union, one beautiful child was born, Cleatus. He preceded her in death after 12 years of marriage and she never remarried again. He truly was the love of her life.
She was educated in the East St. Louis School system, where she graduated from Lincoln Senior High School in 1955.
Mary was a jewel to all who knew and loved her. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her absolutely adored the compassionate and attractive personality she possessed. She was very creative and enjoyed knitting, sewing, constructing crafts, and showing her crafts to small children in various grade schools. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary transitioned to her heavenly home on Thursday, February 8, 2018.
Cherishing her memory are her loving daughter; Cleatus Houston, her brother; Frank Montgomery Sr., and a host of dear nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
