Marshall was born November 15, 1928 in East St. Louis, IL to Marshall E. and Catherine (Quitmeyer) Kern.
He married Loretta Kiefer on September 15, 1951 in Centreville, IL and together they shared 72 wonderful years of marriage. Loretta survives and resides in Shiloh, IL.
Also surviving are their four children, Marsha (James) Karwoski of Shiloh, IL, Patty (Terry) Isbill of Fairview Heights, IL, Larry (Melinda) Kern of O’Fallon, IL and Tim Kern of Fairview Heights, IL; grandchildren, Brendan Karwoski, Danielle (Connor) McCarthy, Chris Broadway, Lara Kern and Adam (Emily) Kern; great-grandchildren, Patrick, Reagan and Sloane; one sister, Betty Wenkel; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marshall was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, JoAnn (Charles) Bullock and brother-in-law, Carl Wenkel.
Marshall was a Union carpenter for Local 662, working throughout his life creating homes for families and beautiful works of art. For many years, he owned and operated Kern Construction.
He was an avid bowler and hunter. He loved to pitch horseshoes, and play baseball, softball and golf with his good friends. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, formerly St. Alberts Catholic Church in Fairview Heights, IL.
Above all else, Marshall loved his family and cherished the time spent with them. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
VISITATION: A visitation for Marshall will be held on Monday, October 2, 2023 from 10:00 A.M.- 12:00 P.M. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fairview Heights, IL.
SERVICE: A funeral Mass will be held following the visitation at 12:00 P.M. at church. Final interment will be at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.
