As a young child, Irene, moved to Rognac, France, where later, during World War II, she met her true love, Emanuel M. Mandis (a U.S. soldier), and were married in 1945. They relocated to the United States in 1946 and enjoyed 33 years together before Emanuel passed away. She was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church and belonged to the Ladies Philoptochos Society. Her interest included family, reading, and crocheting. She spoke four languages and enjoyed talking about history. Irene often spoke fondly of times at the ocean and the countryside in France.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Antoine and Maria, nee Patellis, Courevellis; her loving husband, Emanuel Mandis; three brothers, Venis, John, and Michael; and a sister, Anoula.
Surviving are her son, George (Janet) Mandis of Carbondale, Ill.; a daughter, Maria (Nick) Angelou of Belleville, Ill.; her grandchildren, Irene (Paul) Keller, Stacy Sakellis, and Michael G. (Robyn) Mandis; and her great-grandchildren, George Sakellis, Whitney Keller, and Courtney Keller.

Visitation: Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Swansea, Ill. The Trisagion service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the church.
Funeral: Services will be held at noon, Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at the church with Father Achilles Karathanos officiating. Interment will be held in Mount Hope Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
