SWANSEA- Donald L. Bertelsmann Sr., 88, of Swansea, IL, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at Mercy Rehab and Care Center in Swansea, IL. He was born on May 10, 1933 in Belleville, IL to Joseph F. and Mary C. (Mottin) Bertelsmann.
He married LaVonna Crossley on September 24, 1955 in Belleville, IL and together they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage. She survives him and resides in Swansea, IL.
Also surviving are their two children, Sheri Sintzel (Joseph) of Swansea, IL and Donald L. Bertelsmann Jr. (Carrie Rowe) of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Joseph Sintzel (Carly Maul) of Shiloh, IL and Claire Petterson (Michael) of Smithton, IL.
Don proudly served his country in the United States Army. After his time in the service, he worked as a cartographer for ACIC. He then began his career as a real estate broker, owning and operating his own company for many years. After retirement, Don began to rehab houses in the local area. His talents were many and the joy he got from his life’s work was immeasurable. Don enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, reading a good book, family dinners together and long drives with his beloved wife, LaVonna. His loss leaves a void for his dear friends and family, but his life and legacy will never be forgotten.
The family would like to express a sincere thank you to Mercy Rehab and Care Center to the nurses, caretakers and staff for their tender loving care shown to Don in the last 5 years. The care and concern given to him was truly exceptional.
Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of Southern Illinois, as a thank you for the care and support shown to Don and his family.
A private family graveside service for Don will be held Thursday at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL. Pastor Larry Ridenour will officiate.
