Richard “Dick” Thomas Lawton Cromwell, 80, of Fairhaven, passed away on January 27, 2016 in St. Luke’s Hospital following a period of declining health. He was the husband of Cindy (Macedo) Cromwell with whom he shared 45 years of marriage.
Born in Acushnet, a son of the late Charles E. and Alice (Maxcy) Cromwell, he was a lifelong resident of Fairhaven.
Mr. Cromwell had worked as a machine operator at Morse Cutting Tools for 22 years. He was the owner and operator of Acushnet-Fairhaven Towing.
Known as a jack-of-all trades, Dick served in the National Guard for 9 years and was a volunteer firefighter for the Fairhaven Fire Department. He was Past Vice President of the Corvair City Car Club, Past President of the Acushnet Rifle and Pistol Gun Club, the 50/50 collector for “Wish Come True Foundation” for the Downshifters Car Club of New England, the Goldwing Motorcycle Club and the Howland Chapter of the National Guard Field Artillery Veterans Association. A car enthusiast, Dick was a stock car driver at Seekonk Speedway and was fond of antique cars, especially his 57 Chevy, El Camino and Corvair. He played Santa at the Acushnet Fire Station, enjoyed travel and adventure and going to NASCAR races. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at Honey Dew Donuts. Dick loved his family dogs, Sheba, Shannon, Antoinette, Misha and Skylar Blue.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Kevin M. Cromwell and wife Dee; a daughter, Debra Cromwell all of Fairhaven; step-daughter, Robin Dale (Lopez) Nash of Fairhaven; step-son, Rod Alan Lopez of Dartmouth; a brother, Charles Cromwell and wife Elaine of Fairhaven; a sister, Beverly Perry of Ocala, FL; grandchildren, Jennifer Cromwell-Harrison, Dylan Cole Cromwell, Ozzy and Kasia Grace Lopez; great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Chloe; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Louise Bonneville and son-in-law of the late Margaret Williams.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, February 15, 2016 from 11am-2pm in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to M.O. Life, Inc., 43 Daniel St., Fairhaven, MA 02719 or to his family.
